It was sad when he was dismissed by the NY Observer a couple of years ago, but his voice was still in the air. Now it's too depressing to think of the state of film criticism knowing he's not in the world. How many thumbs up or down?Michael Spornhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02018522723674960270noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-27501132.post-86496875053231757312012-06-20T22:07:29.336-04:002012-06-20T22:07:29.336-04:00Hi Thad. His books on Hawks and Hitchcock are some of the best things written about those directors and Wood had an interest in international film and politics in film that perhaps surpassed Sarris.Mark Mayersonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00065971589878678848noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-27501132.post-67296920449907180442012-06-20T22:03:44.025-04:002012-06-20T22:03:44.025-04:00Wonderful piece on a brilliant writer.

His work is a breath of fresh air from the "this piece isn't about a filmmaker, it's really about how clever I am" prose that seems to dominate any film discussion beyond the "star" rating system.

Film criticism is a difficult art to master, but Sarris did it. So did Manny Farber. Same goes for Jonathan Rosenbaum (sometimes), Mike Barrier, and yourself.Thadhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04443425643665474645noreply@blogger.com
