Considering that the Colonel had been somewhat ineffectual in the initial rescue, what with Tibbs doing all the hard work, it is a satisfying payoff when he takes a stand against Horace and Jasper here in the stable. Though well past his prime, this scene serves to show that the old fellow is still capable of showing his selfless, heroic side, even if Tibbs and the Captain are there as a backup. The character of the Colonel is actually a bit reminiscent of old Trusty in "Lady and the Tramp", now that I think about it.
